How to Cut Angled Parts for Top Gun Aircraft Carrier

TOP GUN USS ENTERPRISE Part 1 and Part 2 PATTERN SUPPLEMENT

It's not required that you angle the bottom pieces (Part 1 and Part 2) of the USS Enterprise. The Aircraft Carrier will still look great with straight cuts. However, by following these step-by-step instructions you can easily and safely cut angled parts for toys such as the Easy Basics Top Gun Aircraft Carrier.

To download a PDF file of these instructions scroll to the bottom of this article.

HOW TO SAFELY CUT PART 1 AND 2 TO SHAPE:

It's not required that you angle the bottom pieces (Part 1 and Part 2) of the USS Enterprise. The Aircraft Carrier will still look great with straight cuts. However, by following these step-by-step instructions you can easily and safely cut angled parts for toys such as the Easy Basics Top Gun Aircraft Carrier.

Step 1. Cut a length of 1-1/2" x 3-1/2" stock 21-1/4" long. This dimension equals the length of Part 1 and Part 2 plus the thickness of the saw blade. Part 1 is 18-1/8" long and Part 2 is 3" long. A typical carbide tooth saw blade is 1/8" thick. 18-1/8" + 3" + 1/8" = 21-1/4" long.

Step 2. Tilt the table saw blade to 45 degrees and cut the 45 degree angle along the 3-1/2" dimension across one end of the Step 1 piece at a point that preserves the 21-1/4" length.

Step 3. Tilt the table saw blade to 60 degrees and cut the 60 degree angle the length of the the Step 2 piece at a point where the top of the angle is 1-3/4" down from the top of the Step 2 piece.

Step 4. With the saw blade remaining at 60 degrees set the table saw miter gauge at 45 degrees and cut the 60 degree angle along the 45 degree angle on the end of the Step 3 piece.

Step 5. Separate Part 1 from Part 2 by cutting the Step 4 piece at 90 degrees and at a point 18-1/8" long from the flat end of the Step 4 piece.

NOTE: For efficiency, the left and right Part 1 and Part 2 can be combined into one 1-1/2" x 3-1/2" x 44" piece. First, cut the 60 degree angle the entire 44" length. Then cut the 44" length into two 21-1/4" pieces and proceed to make the left and right Part 1 and Part 2 pieces as described in Step 1 through Step 5 above.
